St. James is part of the wider Lutheran church called the ELCA. It was formed in 1988 by the merging of three North American Lutheran church bodies: The American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America. Here are some interesting facts:
- 4,709,956 baptized members (2007 figures)
- 10,448 congregations across the U.S. and Caribbean
- 65 synods in nine geographic regions
- 280 service organizations
- 6 million people in 3,000 communities who receive social services from Lutheran Services in America
- 1 in 50 Americans every year receives help from Lutherans
