Worship & Music Jan '10

The meeting began at 7:00 p.m. on Janurary 12th in the conference room. Devotions were lead by Pastor Don Williams who prayed for the health and wellbeing of Mary’s father and her whole family.

Committee Members in attendance: Donna D’Errico, Mary Ferreira, Thelma Sweet, Ellen Zawislak Cheryl Gray, Suzanne Nadeau, Betty Brito and Pastor Williams.

The December minutes were accepted. In relation to the suggestion regarding procedure for extending the Peace, Pastor Williams will write an announcement for the bulletin, discussing options.

Also noted in the December minutes was the change of title for the position we are trying to fill, and Betty shared her viewpoint on that. The title “Organist/Choir Director” does not reflect the position we are advertising as it does not include any mention of the contemporary service or the need to also play the piano. In the least, Director of Music is more appropriate than the “new” title, but it is, in her opinion, disappointing that the change was made. This is a significant new direction. Perhaps any substantial changes like this should be reserved for discussion with the incoming Pastor.

There were no new suggestions in the box.

There was no Pastor’s report; however, Betty reported that she and Mary had met to plan the blended service for January 24th. Mary has prepared a draft bulletin which she will review with Pastor Williams and Joanne; Betty and Mary have selected a balance of Contemporary and Traditional music for the service.

There was no Minister of Music’s report.

Ellen report that the Altar Guild is doing fine. She will be making an adjustment to the flower charts so that people do not sign up during Lent. We will again be using peace lilies. Ellen will also submit an article for the Scroll and to the bulletin regarding payment for flowers. Direct billing from the florist has eliminated the need for use of the flower envelopes, and people need to be reminded of that protocol. Ted Zimmerman will be asked to adjust the envelope order so that flower envelopes are no longer included.

Kim Bergstrand reported on the progress of the Lenten Program. She met with Pastor Williams and the program will include discussion, prayer and reflection on the Gospel of John and the “I Am” statements. We will continue with the practice of simple soup suppers. (Joanne has the Sign-up sheet template for those dinners and should be reminded to print them for display in the Community Room.)

The team selected the traditional music for the month of February (see attached sheet for selected songs). The Contemporary Team has already completed music selection for most of February.

Carolyn Fales held acolyte training for new acolytes on Sunday, January 10th between the services.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer at 8:50p.m. The next meeting date was not set.

Respectfully submitted,
Betty Brito
