You are here

Prayer

Becoming Lake

Eyes turned toward the sun
Body weightless; suddenly unbounded
Melting from within to without
Becoming one with all

Behind eyelids, shimmering red
Sun and soul entwined
Fingers reaching outwards
Becoming one with water

Floating stillness silences
Within all is calm, serene
Heart touching universe
Becoming lake

Wednesday Prayer

On the grass I see your shadow;
But the sky; only light.
For I know you are no loftier than the wind
Which lives with me.
But to see is not to see
And faith is flight.

 You are movement that removes death;
The shadow that reveals light.
You are the word that has no sound,
That speaks, not spoken,
But heard.

Prayer: Fasting from the World

Lent often conjures up ideas of fasting from foods or denial of physical and material things.  Fasting can be done on a different more spiritual level.  Jesus went into the desert, into the wilderness... alone to pray.  Silence and solitude are also ways of fasting; one is literally denying oneself the pleasures of world and community. This aloneness cleans us out, just like a dietary fast has a cleansing effect on the body.  This is an important part of most spiritual disciplines and integral to a life of prayer.

Here is Your God!

This week in the readings Luke quotes Isaiah. (See Luke 3: 4-6)

The actual text of Isaiah is a bit different. It reads:
A voice cries out:
"In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord,
Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Every valley shall be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
The uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
And all people shall see it together,
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken."
(Isaiah 40:3-5, NRSV)

God's Voice

And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice... when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave.   Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" (1 Kings 19:11-13)
