You are here

God's Voice

Primary tabs

And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice... when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave.   Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" (1 Kings 19:11-13)

We are confronted with the unexpected.  The expectation is that that God's voice should be earth shattering, thunderous, imposing.  But we see that the Lord does not speak in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire.   Instead, after all the fanfare, Elijah hears a still small voice. This voice is not commanding or accusing, but is calm, and quiet. God is inviting Elijah into a conversation.

QUESTION:  Are you listening for God's voice?  How can your expectations make you hearing-impaired?  How would you answer His question "What are you doing here?"
